To The Editor:
As a parent and an educator, I know firsthand what it means to value and support education. Newtown is fortunate to have Chris Lyddy standing up and fighting for education in Hartford.
Having personally known Chris his entire life and being his lifelong neighbor, I am especially proud of all of his accomplishments.
During his first term, Chris Lyddy was appointed to the State Education Committee. He led the way on legislation that ensures children with autism receive the services they need, fought for improved high school graduation standards, and co-sponsored legislation that works to make our students ready for college or a career after graduation.
Chris's work is not only recognized by us in Newtown, it has earned him recognition across the state. He was named a Children's Champion by the Early Child Alliance for two consecutive years, and earned ConnCAN's inaugural Tip of the Cap Award for his hard work on education policy.
Without the tools and resources necessary for success, our children will be unable to compete and succeed after high school. I applaud Chris Lyddy's steadfast determination in fighting for such an important cause at the state legislature. In him, Newtown students, teachers, school staff, and parents have a true advocate. Chris Lyddy is listening to our needs, working for our children and us.
I respect and trust Chris Lyddy's integrity and have no doubt that Chris Lyddy will continue his passionate commitment to education as our representative in Hartford. I support his reelection with great enthusiasm. I hope you will join me in voting to reelect Chris Lyddy on November 2 so that he can continue working for all of us here in Newtown.
Sincerely,
Laura Hegarty

To the Editor:
It's easy to write this letter of support for our State Representative, Chris Lyddy; it's more difficult to review, in only 500 words, the extent of leadership, the number of accolades, and the amount of success he has achieved for Newtown and the State of Connecticut in but two years. We all know how strong Chris has been for education. His awards reflect hard work and vision. Chris has always gotten education right the first time! And, he has never tied himself to any particular party faction, but instead, listens to voters, educates himself on the issues, makes his own decisions, and leads accordingly. I'm frequently in Hartford, as a result, I can tell you who are the most effective and important leaders. In only two years, Chris Lyddy has become one of the leaders. With all due respect to Mr Ferguson, his comment that Chris is too young to influence his party demonstrates a prejudice that has been proven wrong already, and also wrong historically (Jefferson, 25 years old, Declaration of Independence; Hamilton, 21 years old, Aide-de-camp to George Washington; Madison, 21 years old – Virginia Constitution, 32 years old – US Constitution; the Republican "star" John Rowland was 29 years old when elected to the US House).
Here are some of the important issues that Chris has been instrumental in addressing for Newtown:
Hawleyville-Transfer/Railroad: Fought the railroad and co-wrote the state legislation that protects the wetland process (the Republican governor vetoed it; Chris led the fight that overrode the veto);
Acted immediately to secure full State Public Health hearings and stay the United Water Co. effort to deplete Newtown's aquifer and jeopardize the Pootatuck. The Republican governor is pushing for water to Brookfield at financial and environmental costs to Newtown;
Collaborated on the State Education Contingency Account legislation that enables Boards of Education to place into a town account unexpended yearly monies to be drawn in subsequent years. This allows Boards of Education to more efficiently budget without risk of underfunding. There is a limit to the amount permitted in the Contingency fund;
Promoted Fiscal Accountability and Responsibility (FAR) with persons like Representative Tom Reynolds, State Treasurer Nappier and others who champion honest accounting. The governor until last week opposed this, as well. FAR planning also promotes controlled sState spending and sufficient state support to municipalities to alleviate escalating property tax burdens;
Promoted the Municipal Mandate Relief bill that reduced municipal administrative costs, freeing them from previously unfunded mandates;
Promoted the Searchable Budget Database that compels the State Budget to be placed online for public review;
Promotes job growth, reduction of business taxes, and tuition relief for students in Connecticut colleges who major in mathematics or the sciences and work in Connecticut jobs;
Provides office hours in Newtown.
And there is more, but … I'm out of space.
In short, Chris Lyddy is an experienced leader, and a native Newtowner committed to us. He has earned reelection.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Jim Gaston

To the Editor:
Chris Lyddy's involvement in the community in which we live has not gone unnoticed over the past two years. He is always willing to listen to an issue, and then follow up with the research and the hard work required to help a cause.
Chris has been very supportive of Newtown's volunteer fire companies. He has done extensive research into obtaining grants for equipment and firehouse construction. When CL&P made a decision to restrict night lighting at the firehouses, causing a safety concern for members responding to night calls, it was Chris who stepped in to rectify the situation.
Chris has been actively involved in the continuing revitalization of Sandy Hook Center. Immediately after taking office, he continued the efforts to have the state replace the traffic light in Sandy Hook in order to improve safety there. He joined in the local merchants' and residents' efforts to extend the water line to better service the district. With the help of the current boards and council, the water line extension is becoming a reality. Chris has given his support to extending the streetscape in the district, as well.
Let's give Chris the support he deserves so he can continue to work for all of us.

To the Editor –
Three years ago, we had the honor of meeting one of the most genuine people we know. Chris Lyddy walked into our deli for lunch one day, and we had no idea who he was then, but since that day, our friendship has grown fast and true.
Owning a small business can be very difficult at times. Chris has taken a sincere interest in the success of our little deli, as well as other local businesses. He has been proactive in guiding us with the continuation of the revitalization of Sandy Hook Center in the hopes of generating interest; and therefore, revenue for local business. Chris takes a direct interest in the health and safety of our children as was proven when he was recently recognized as a Children’s Champion for the second time.
On a very personal level, Chris made himself available to us when our son was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last year, offering us his help and support. His interest and concern was a true testament to the fact that we were not just “a vote” to him, but real people faced with a real crisis.
We are confident that Chris Lyddy is the right candidate, the only candidate, capable of representing our community needs in Hartford. He will undoubtedly have our vote on November 2.

To the Editor:
It isn't too often these days that we hear something positive on the news, in the newspapers or over the airwaves — we can all agree with that. Our society has become such that we turn on the television and just hear about all of the negative aspects of our society. It's getting kind of old.
Chris Lyddy is a representative who I can honestly say brings some positive to our community. For those of you who don't agree or who attempt to bring that positivity down — it is time to look in the mirror. Take the time to appreciate what he has done.
Chris Lyddy is my brother. I rarely see him because of the commitment he has to this town. He made a decision to represent Newtown and has done it with honesty and integrity. He loves his job, which only adds to the reason that he is so darn good at it. He has a passion to represent us. He is working for us everyday in Hartford.
So whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent or even an unaffiliated — it really doesn't matter. My brother is working for the town of Newtown, the people. Throw the labels away — appreciate what he has done — and trust that he is the right person for this position.
The respect he has garnered from both the Republicans and Democrats in Hartford should help portray the job he has done in just two years. Imagine what will happen in the next two.
Enthusiastically,
Kyle Lyddy

To the Editor:
I am writing this letter to bring to Newtown's attention the work that Representative Chris Lyddy has done on the Speaker's Task Force on Children in the Recession. As a member of the task force, he traveled the state listening to people affected by the recession. Based on these stories from families, the task force crafted legislation to protect children during the current economic recession and future times of economic hardship. Bill #5360, "An Act Concerning Children in the Recession" was passed by the House and Senate and signed into law by the governor.
The law provides common sense solutions and proactive governance to ensure that the children of Connecticut are protected against hunger, homelessness, low birth weight, abuse, and school failures. It is reassuring to know that the basic needs of children will be safeguarded during times of statewide recession and hardship. The fundamental pillar of government is to protect citizens from harm. Rep Lyddy heard the stories of despair from parents and responded with a plan to ensure that children, the most vulnerable to the cruelties of sudden poverty, are protected.
I voted for social worker Chris Lyddy two years ago because I had confidence that he would listen to the needs of citizens, protect children and families, and respond with action and that is why I will vote for him again on November 2.
Sincerely,

Bringing Newtown Together

To the Editor:
Each year, the Labor Day Parade brings Newtown residents together to celebrate all aspects of our community, state, and country. This year was no exception. In fact, I have never been more energized by the spirit of all those involved. Whether you marched in the parade or graciously cheered as we walked by, we all shared in this Newtown tradition that is coveted by people both near and far.
As I made my way down the route, I was reminded of how special Newtown is and how grateful we should all be to live in such a supportive and inclusive community.
This past weekend we reminded each other, neighbor-to-neighbor, of all the things important to our town. Everything from religious freedom and acceptance to youth programming was showcased along the parade route, allowing both participants and spectators the great opportunity to support one another and highlight the importance of unity during a time when division seems all too popular.
Thank you, Beth Caldwell and the parade committee for all that you continue to do to keep us united and marching in step with one another.
All my best,
Chris Lyddy

To the Editor:
One of Newtown's beauties is our location: beautiful fields and great wooded areas. With that, however, come ticks. Unfortunately, my family has had a family member diagnosed with Lyme disease for two consecutive years. Until you have personally experienced this disease, it is hard to understand how terribly it can impact a person's life.
This is one of the many reasons I am grateful for the hard work of Representative Chris Lyddy. Newtown is well-served by this young man, someone who listens to the real concerns of our community, learns about the issues at hand, and takes a leading role in making a difference for his constituents.
As he campaigned for his first election, Chris heard about the devastating effects Lyme disease was having on our community. With the highest rate of Lyme disease in this area, and Newtown being ranked in the top 20 towns for most cases in the state, Chris saw first-hand what a problem this was for his district.
And he didn't waste time getting to work for us!
In his first session as a state rep, Chris listened to the situation Newtown families were facing. He heard our stories and carried our voices of this struggle to Hartford. Working with members of Newtown's Lyme Disease Task Force, Chris co-sponsored a bill allowing "a licensed physician to prescribe, administer, or dispense long-term antibiotic therapy" to patients with Lyme disease. HB 6200 was passed in the 2009 session, and removed the barriers Connecticut physicians had previously faced when trying to treat patients infected with Lyme disease.
As a freshman legislator, Chris Lyddy has already proven to be an effective leader. This is just one example of his ability to listen to an outcry from those he represents, and work on our behalf in Hartford. Two years ago, Chris promised to carry the voices of Newtown to Hartford, and he has done just that. I am grateful to Rep Lyddy for his work on behalf of my family, and thank him for his service to the people of Newtown.
Please join me in reelecting Chris Lyddy on November 2. I am confident he will continue to work hard for all of Newtown's families.

To the Editor:
Once again, I have the good fortune of writing to support Representative Christopher Lyddy in his bid for a second term of office in Connecticut's General Assembly. Chris has done an outstanding job as a freshman legislator, rolling up his sleeves and immersing himself in the job right away.
As predicted, Chris's fortitude, strength, and integrity have served him well in his first term. The many accolades we've read about come as no surprise to us here. Chris is the real deal! He's an honest, hardworking guy with a no-nonsense, straightforward attitude toward his job. He's a keen listener tuned to the needs of his constituents.
In his short tenure, Chris has worked tirelessly to preserve funding for our schools and to improve education for all within our state, focusing on the achievement gap which exists between our cities and towns. He's been called the "Children's Champion" by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance and has been voted the Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers two years in a row. Most recently, Chris received the "Tip of the Cap" award from the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now.
Chris is a change-maker with a clear sense of purpose and the knowledge and skill to carry it out. I hope you'll join me as I cast my vote once more for Chris Lyddy this November 2. And please don't hesitate to join the entire Lyddy family as they march down Main Street this weekend.
Thank you, Chris, for all you've done to make your hometown proud!

Last week I read the news of Chris LaRocque's dishonesty regarding campaign fraud with great disappointment. The idea that someone who cannot follow rules on a grant application and displayed fraud regarding campaign donations wants to represent us in Hartford is discouraging. We don't need someone like that representing our town.
Two years ago, Newtown elected Chris Lyddy. He has been a breath of fresh air in the political world, someone who I am proud to call my representative. He has continually impressed me during our conversations at the Lobster Fest, the Duck Race, the Labor Day Parade, Danbury Hospital Children's Day, and multiple other events around town. He has worked hard for the people of Newtown, fighting and advocating for us. Most importantly, as a mother of two young children, Rep Lyddy has been the kind of person I want as a role model for my children. Our elected officials serve as leaders in our community, and as people our children look up to. Rep Lyddy has the honesty, integrity. and dedication my kids should be looking up to.
The news of Mr. LaRocque's campaign fraud last week gave Newtown voters a clear picture of their choice this November. It appears as though Mr LaRocque will do anything to get ahead and that his personal political ambition is more important than anything else. In Rep Lyddy we see someone who truly cares about the people of Newtown, who has represented our best interests, and who holds true to the values we need most in our elected officials. I am happy to place my trust in Rep Lyddy as our representative in Hartford, and trust that Newtown voters will join me in reelecting him this November.

So in the span of a week, an obviously in-over-his-head candidate for Newtown's state House seat was found to have committed campaign fraud, and partisan members of the Board of Education tried to bar Representative Chris Lyddy from accepting an award at his elementary school alma mater (really?) for his support of education.
The only bright light in a largely dark political universe continues to be Rep Lyddy, who has represented the 106th House District with trademark class, competency, commitment to community, and conviction since his election two years ago. His good work is well documented, and he is more than deserving of our continued support in November.

Preserving Clean Elections
8/18/2010
To the Editor:
I am writing to thank State Representative Chris Lyddy for standing up for fairness and accountability in state government. When Rep Lyddy voted to override Governor Rell's veto last Friday on An Act Concerning Clean Elections, he voted to preserve the Citizens' Election Program (CEP), a system of public financing for state elections that goes a long way to ensure that voters can choose a candidate beholden to no special interests but those of the voters themselves.
I also wish to express my disappointment that the other legislators representing Newtown, Rep Hovey and Sen McKinney, chose to oppose this important measure, thereby voting against reducing the power of special interests and the influence of private money in politics.
The CEP has made Connecticut a model for good government reform nationwide, and I am proud to have a state representative who went against political pressure and voted for accountability and clean elections. Thanks, Chris!

Chris Lyddy has shown that he is the kind of legislator that Newtown needs. As a member of the Newtown Board of Education and as a parent, I have seen Chris clearly demonstrate his support for education both in word and deed. His efforts in Hartford were an important part of the recent passage of bills improving special education and strengthening our high schools.
Chris has also provided the kind of leadership that Newtown needs on the other critical issues facing us: the environment, jobs, and controlling taxes. Whether it is protecting the Hawleyville aquifer, achieving more sensible siting of cell towers, or working for a sensible state budget, Chris has gotten the job done.
Despite his accomplishments, I believe Chris's greatest asset is his desire and ability to work openly with everyone, transcending party lines. In a time where many seem to want to put their party before the good of all people, we desperately need people like Chris in government.
I support Christopher Lyddy for State Representative and hope that you will to.

I seldom find myself writing a letter to the editor. I am usually at my breakfast table on Saturday morning reading The Newtown Bee to learn what my fellow townsfolk have to say. However, I am so enthusiastic in my support of our State Representative Christopher Lyddy, that I felt I must share my feelings.
I do not have children, but feel strongly that the education of our young people benefits us all. Rep Lyddy is a strong advocate of education. We are so lucky to have him representing us in the 106th District. Chris was given the "Tip of the Cap" Award this year by the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now. In his service on the Education Committee, Chris has brought his energy to achieving goals which will strengthen our education system in Connecticut and help our students gain success in their future lives.
This was an easy letter to write. I urge my fellow Newtowners to keep Christopher Lyddy in Hartford. He will continue to work hard for us and our children and he will make us proud.

I would like to take a moment to share with Newtown an experience I had with our State Representative Christopher Lyddy.
I have lived in a private community on Sugar Street for many years. Over the past four years our neighborhood has been suffering with contaminated drinking water in our housing complex. After many unsuccessful attempts to get cooperation from our management company, without satisfactory results, I decided to seek assistance in how to get this problem resolved and who better to call then our State Representative Christopher Lyddy.
Mr Lyddy was readily available and without hesitation, spoke with me. He listened carefully and compassionately to my concerns.
Mr Lyddy contacted the State Department of Health and the Newtown Health District along with the management company. In a short amount of time Mr Lyddy reported back to me with confirmation that the water had been tested and is within the level of drinking standards. Mr Lyddy followed up his findings in a personal letter addressed to each one of the tenants in my complex with the state standards report (along with his contact number and email address) should there be any further questions. He put us at ease in knowing the problem has been addressed and corrected.
Our community thanks Christopher Lyddy for his compassion toward the people of Newtown and his attention to detail. He gets the job done.
I encourage you to join me in supporting the reelection of our State Representative Christopher Lyddy for the up coming election.
He's the only choice for our voice!

To the Editor:
I would just like to share my experience with your readers about State Representative Christopher Lyddy. Chris has been my guardian angel since May of 2009. When illness struck a member of my family (with no medical insurance) I did not know where or to whom I should turn. I picked up the phone and called several agencies and got no where. I decided to call state representatives. Rep Lyddy was the only one that called back, emailed me with different options. His compassionate way about him was just so wonderful. He assured me that he would help in any way possible (which he has done). Till this day he has not stopped; things have gotten a little better due to his help.
So this past Saturday, the hottest day of the year, I thought to myself, let me do something for him to thank him for his help and concern. I called his assistant and asked if I could go door to door to gain support from the voters in Newtown. I was welcomed with open arms.
So out I went! The temperature reached 105 degrees. I spent five hours knocking on doors, going up very, very long driveways in the Sandy Hook part of town. The response that I received from the voters was overwhelming. The town residents are so excited for the upcoming election and can not wait for Chris to be voted in once again.
I was so amazed at how the people were so willing to invite me into their homes for a glass of water, a cold washcloth for my sweltering face was even offered at one woman's home that was just released that day from the hospital, another was an elderly man that offered to drive me around in his air-conditioned car.
Newtown should be so proud that Rep Lyddy cares so much about the citizens and will work even harder this coming term. So please call and volunteer as I did, it is so worthwhile. Although the heat was unbearable it was if you can even imagine fun to meet the wonderful voters and supporters that Chris has.
So please if you can spare an hour or two or even more...Chris would love to hear from you. You will not regret it at all.
Very truly yours,

To the Editor:
In the middle of a heat wave in July, the fall election is not the first thing on our minds, but it is certainly on our State Representative Chris Lyddy's mind as he goes door-to-door to ask us about our concerns and listens to our ideas. He is a modest person, so he spends more time listening to us talk about what we care about than reciting his accomplishments, and there are many. So, it is up to us who support him to praise his virtues.
I support Chris Lyddy's reelection as our state representative for many reasons, certainly among them are his legislative record; outstanding constituent service; ability to work across the aisle, such as with Senator McKinney to pass legislation to protect our town, i.e., the Hawleyville railroad transfer station problem; or to obtain state aid for Newtown.
Beyond all of those accomplishments a little noticed, but extremely important reason for keeping him our representative, however, is the remarkable relationship-building that he has done in less than two years. I have been involved in local and state government activities for many years and it is amazing how many of the people I know at the state level who also know Chris Lyddy and are impressed with his abilities, in just his first term.
He has the attention of the legislative leaders and the leading candidate for governor, who chose Chris to make one of the three nominating speeches for him at the convention. From firsthand experience, I can't stress enough how important it is for our town to have a person in Hartford who has built the relationships in the legislature and the governor's office to gain their help whenever we may need it.
Finally, we don't have to guess where Chris stands on the issues that are important to Newtown; education, environment, health care, economy and more. He has been consistent and steadfast in energetically working for us. Please join me in working for and voting for Chris Lyddy for State Representative, 106th District.

The recent work being done to expand Newtown High School, while promising, has arrived as the culmination of years of deliberation, indecision, and delay. Any recent graduate can no doubt recall the pressures of overcrowding, as well as the frustration as more and more time slipped by without a solution. The process has by this point become routine: votes and revotes on school budgets, quick-fix solutions such as portable classrooms, and too many officials unwilling to stand up for Newtown's schools. The students of this town are the backbone of our community, and it is imperative now more than ever that long-term investments are made to ensure their future success. Time and time again, Chris Lyddy has shown that he is ready and willing to fight for education in Newtown.
At the end of his first term as our representative in Hartford, the results of Chris's hard work are evident. In addition to his work on legislation improving early childhood and special education, Chris has also helped to strengthen graduation requirements and prioritize public school reform in the state of Connecticut. Chris was recently named 2010 Legislator of the Year, and his tireless efforts have garnered awards and recognition from the Early Childhood Alliance and the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now. In the years to come these accomplishments will serve as the groundwork for further improvement to our schools.
To govern well is to stand by one's principles and make difficult decisions which will benefit the community as a whole. Our current economic climate has made this decisionmaking process even more difficult with the constriction of public funding and the ever-present drive to cut costs; however, what has been made clear is that over the past two years Chris Lyddy has been eager and willing to make these choices and fight for the residents (and students) of Newtown. If we wish to see the continuing improvement of our schools and the continuing success of Newtown's youth, then Chris Lyddy is by far our best candidate for state representative.

I couldn't agree more with the plethora of recent commentaries about how our State Representative Chris Lyddy is doing an exceptional job for Newtown. He is at the forefront leading in the fight for Newtown and our important issues, including the Railroad Transfer Station environmental debacle in Hawleyville, and the United Water-Brookfield water matter that threatens our aquifer and the Pootatuck, likewise a potential environmental and financial crisis.
Personally, I have turned to him on several important issues to which he immediately responded and took action. His communication skills are superb. He has won several important awards, including for his education initiatives. He and Representative Tom Reynolds support fiscal responsibility, and in only a year and a half he has earned the tremendous respect of other legislators, as well as the state boards and commissions. Contrary to this "gotcha" political environment, I like to think we are not all too jaded or old-fashioned to just say thanks for the great work... so...thanks, Chris Lyddy, for your abundant assistance and good old-fashioned hard work! Well done. We know you will keep it up.

I am happy to show my support in endorsing Chris Lyddy to be reelected as our state representative. Chris is involved in numerous organizations in Newtown. It is wonderful to have a state rep who is so involved and committed to local causes. Having grown up in Newtown and now representing us, his involvement and hard work demonstrates the concern he shows for his fellow Newtowners. His current record speaks for itself, as shown again in last week's Bee with an articled entitled "Association of Social Workers Honors Lyddy."
Chris has won many awards while working tirelessly for us and will continue to do so. He is a state representative anyone can reach out to; always accessible and willing to listen and help. During the last few weeks, after reading letters about our State Representative Chris Lyddy, I have thought back to the recent times that I have seen Chris when he was not in session in Hartford. I observed him listening to John Hamilton, a counselor who spoke about the drug and alcohol issues and the young people in this area and neighboring towns. The next day, I observed him sitting in the back of a church in Newtown grieving the tragic death of a fine young woman from Newtown.
Observing and listening are two essential traits of people who represent others in any capacity. We are blessed to have this young man represent us, and someday in the future we will be proud to say that we knew him when he served us in our hometown of Newtown. In the meantime, I am grateful that he is representing us.

Nearly four months ago, Chris LaRocque announced he was running for state representative, and made it very clear he was adamantly opposed to public financing. It was a focal point of his website, and seemed to be the center of his campaign.
Imagine my surprise when he announced this week he had changed his mind! In his announcement Chris says that the people of Newtown must know what each candidate stands for and make sure they are clear on the issues. Well, if this is any indication, Chris is making that impossible. "We need to give the people of Newtown the best idea of what each candidate stands for, and make sure they are clear on the issues." (Quoted from Mr LaRocque). What is it that you stand for Mr LaRocque; and what issues are you clear on? I am trying to figure this out!
He insisted it was a bad program. Now he's using it. His website platform says he wants to eliminate the very program he is using to run his campaign!
Quite honestly, I don't care how he finances his campaign. What I care about is having a straight forward state representative who does not switch things around whenever the wind blows a different way. I want to know that in difficult times my representative has the judgment, stiff backbone, and morals to stay strong and not pick the easy option. When faced with a tough choice, I want my state representative to know what he believes, is right for his constituents and have the courage to stand up for it and not be swayed by pressure. Chris Lyddy is that kind of representative and has proven this many times on many issues over the last two years.
Being an elected official isn't easy, but I am proud of the way Rep Lyddy has excelled as our state representative. He has been faced with difficult decisions, and he has made the right choice. He hasn't been swayed by outside pressures, he hasn't flip-flopped on key issues, and he hasn't backed down on what he believes in. In these challenging times, we need someone who can stand up and stay strong. Rep Lyddy has proven these past two years that he has the courage, knowledge, and good judgment to be a leader in the legislature. He has clearly articulated his thoughts, shared his beliefs, and explained his votes. Rep Lyddy has done Newtown proud, has done what he promised to do two years ago when we elected him, and I hope Newtown voters give him the reelection he so deserves.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read Mr O'Donnell's letter [of endorsement] last week. He seems to want to hear more about Chris Lyddy's voting record, so I figured I'd share some details.
Let me start where Mr O'Donnell left off…the fiscal situation. When Rep Lyddy was elected the state was facing a deficit. In two years, that deficit has been erased. It has been erased by increasing the cigarette tax, and implementing a tax on families earning over $1 million. At the same time, it allowed services to remain intact, libraries to stay open, and towns and cities to receive level funding. (In one term on Newtown's Legislative Council, Chris LaRocque has passed a budget that cuts funding to town roads, cuts educational assistants, and raises property taxes…while we're speaking of records.)
Being state representative is about so much more than the budget. It's about making a difference in peoples' lives. So let me share some more of Rep Lyddy's record:
Rep Lyddy championed a bill to increase treatment for Lyme disease patients.
Rep Lyddy co-sponsored legislation to use green cleaning products in schools to create a better learning environment for students, and a better workplace for teachers and staff.
Rep Lyddy and Senator McKinney advocated for protection of the Hawleyville aquifer area.
Rep Lyddy fought for legislation to ensure students with autism receive the quality services they deserve.
Rep Lyddy helped towns to be less reliant on property taxes to fund municipal services by allowing for and encouraging regional efficiencies and pooling of benefits.
Rep Lyddy provided relief for dairy farms in Connecticut.
Rep Lyddy advocated for and ensured Kevin's Community Center had the funding it need to build an expanded and accessible facility.
Rep Lyddy passed a comprehensive, bipartisan jobs bill, which includes tax incentives, job opportunities and mortgage relief.
Rep Lyddy advocated for and passed legislation to provide funds for the NHS expansion project.
Rep Lyddy fought to ensure tighter restrictions on the siting of cellphone towers.
Rep Lyddy ensured citizens who purchased their hunting and fishing licenses before the fee structure was rolled back received the appropriate credit.
And all of this is in his first term as state representative. That, Mr O'Donnell, is a very impressive record from someone who knows who to reach across the aisle, work with advocates, compromise and collaborate to do what is best for his constituents. It's why so many letters tout his awards and recognition…because he has worked hard to earn them, and deserves these recognitions for all he has done.
What I'd like to know is if Mr O'Donnell can honestly say there's someone else running for state representative who has a better record of service, a stronger record of commitment, or a more impressive record of fighting for our community. The simple answer, is no. Chris Lyddy is the only person who has a record, and has earned his reelection.

To the Editor:
We are so lucky in Newtown to have a state representative like Chris Lyddy.
As a social worker, I am excited that Chris is receiving the Legislator of the Year Award by the National Association of Social Workers. NASW is presenting him with this award based of his hard work on the Speaker's Task Force on Children in the Recession and Domestic Violence and the Working Group on Community-based Human Services that he achieved this recognition.
As a mom, I am proud that Chris was named a Children's Champion in Connecticut by the CT Early Childhood Alliance.
And as a voter, I am thrilled that even though Chris does not sit on the Environment Committee, he received a 100 percent score on the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters 2009 Scorecard.
The issues I care about the most: the environment, and the well-being of women, children, and families, and are the exact ones that he has been recognized for his freshman year as our state representative.
We are lucky in Newtown to have a social worker advocating for us in Hartford who is bound by the social work code of ethics. With Chris as our state representative we get not a politician but a champion of families.
He has represented us well in the General Assembly and deserves to be reelected in November!
Sincerely,
Addie Sandler

Freshman Representative Already ‘A Remarkable Leader’
June 8, 2010
To the Editor:
Over the last 18 months I have had the pleasure of collaborating with our State Representative Christopher Lyddy on legislation that will ensure that Connecticut's children with autism receive special services from credentialed providers. Although he is a freshman representative, Christopher Lyddy clearly knows how to navigate the legislative system and has established excellent relationships with other legislators on both sides of the aisle. He has a well-deserved reputation with his colleagues as a "doer" and as a creative, intelligent problem solver.
While my cause was certainly fortunate to have Rep Lyddy as a champion, as a resident of Newtown I was delighted to observe firsthand how effective and efficient our state representative is while representing our local interests, and those of the state at large. Having observed him at work in the Education Committee, as well as on the floor of the House of Representatives, I found his questions to be thoughtful and insightful, and his comments and concerns right on target across a variety of issues.
Rep Lyddy is both articulate and concise. His energy, values, commitment, and intellect are impressive to say the least. He is a truly remarkable leader who has much to contribute to the greater good of our state.
Our legislators and public officials frequently work long and hard on our behalf without us remembering to thank them for doing the good jobs they do — often while the rest of us are home eating dinner and enjoying our families. Rep Lyddy is doing his job exceedingly well, and I for that thank him from the bottom of my heart.
Sincerely,

Deserved Recognition

To the Editor:
I would like to congratulate our State Representative Chris Lyddy on two recent recognitions. First, Chris has won the National Association of Social Workers award for the 2010 Legislator of the Year. The NASW has a long history of recognizing people who truly make a positive impact on their communities and Chris has been there for Newtown.
Chris has also been recognized, for the second time, as a Children's Champion by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance. This award is for Chris's commitment to improving child development and making sure that children are able to come to school, healthy and ready to learn.
I would like to thank Chris for his hard work on behalf of Newtown and make these recognitions public so that all of Newtown can be proud of his service to us and children and families around the state.

To the Editor:
I attended the Democratic Caucus for Newtown's 106th State Representative last night. As I was listening to the speeches, I heard about some of the things that Chris Lyddy has accomplished during his first term. I was impressed with the extent of his accomplishments and the awards they have led to.
I know how difficult it is to earn your place and gain the respect of your colleagues in Hartford. Chris has worked hard and done that.
Chris is working hard to protect what you hold dear — your family and their needs.
Chris was given the honor of nominating Chris Murphy for another term for the Fifth District. He was also honored by giving a seconding speech at the Democratic Convention last Saturday.
Sincerely,

To the Editor:
Almost two years ago, Newtown voters elected a novice as our state representative. All that people knew at the time was that Chris Lyddy was hardworking and passionate about Newtown. We didn't know if he could translate those qualities into action.
Fortunately, voters' faith in him has been rewarded by his leadership in several important pieces of legislation: an act to provide services to students with autism, a bill to improve indoor air quality standards in schools, and a bill that increases access to treatment for those with Lyme disease. In a bipartisan effort, Chris introduced and strongly advocated for a bill to protect Connecticut's aquifers. This gives Newtown an important tool in stopping the expansion of the Housatonic Railroad in Hawleyville. When the state subsidy for the high school expansion was in question, Chris attended numerous subcommittee meetings to make sure Newtown didn't lose this money. As a member of the Parent Connection Board of Directors, Chris continues his commitment to Newtown youth and their parents at the local level.
Any questions voters may have had two years ago about Chris Lyddy's maturity and ability to do the job have been answered. He is knowledgeable, extremely capable, hardworking, and dedicated to Newtown. I'm honored to support his candidacy to represent Newtown in Connecticut's General Assembly.
Sincerely,

To the Editor:
On Tuesday I will be one in a room full of Democrats as we cast our votes at Representative Lyddy's caucus to nominate him to a second term as our state representative. I am proud to offer my support for his reelection.
For the past two years, Chris Lyddy has served the people of Newtown in Hartford; collaborating with other legislators, working across the aisle, and devoting himself wholeheartedly to bettering the lives of people in Newtown.
As the campaign goes on, there will be plenty of opportunities for people to comment on the tremendous impact Rep Lyddy has had on Newtown. Whether it was through legislation, dealing with state agencies, or advocating for individuals, Rep Lyddy has dedicated himself to serving us, the people of Newtown, and for that, I am most grateful.
While the list of things Rep Lyddy has done for Newtown is too lengthy for this letter, I would like to take a moment to share a few things that come to mind. In just the past couple weeks, Rep Lyddy teamed up with Senator McKinney, proposing and voting for legislation that will help to protect aquifer areas. They both fought for this legislation knowing how important it is to the people of Newtown that we protect one of our most valuable resources, the environment. Knowing that Newtown has one of the highest rates of Lyme disease in the area, Rep Lyddy co-sponsored legislation ensuring Connecticut residents had access to wider arrays of treatment for this crippling disease. In these difficult economic times, Rep Lyddy voted for a budget that preserved funding to our schools and towns. In a continued effort to help towns and cities save money, Rep Lyddy advocated for a bill that allows pooling of prescription drugs, a move that could save Newtown up to $250,000. Rep Lyddy is also working with the Department of Economic Development and programs such as CT Main Street to help attract businesses to Newtown. He went to legislative leaders and fought to ensure hunters and fisherman who purchased their licenses early get the credit they rightly deserve. Rep Lyddy continues to serve as a resource with the State Department of Education, closely following the high school expansion project. These are just a few examples of the many ways Rep Lyddy has been working for the people of Newtown during his first term in office.
As a lifelong resident of Newtown, and someone who has always been actively engaged with this community, it is no surprise that Rep Lyddy got right to work for us in Hartford, fighting for us on the frontlines and ensuring our voices were heard. I am grateful he is willing to continue his service to the people of Newtown, and hope you will join me in supporting him!
Sincerely,
